Finding Joyful Movement in 2023

As we are moving our way through the new year, many people set movement goals for 2023. If you are hoping to work on your relationship with movement this year, we encourage you to think of the ways in which movement adds to your life and can be a positive experience.

At SDNG, we think movement can be an important part of your day, when it aligns with your values and is something that you enjoy. This is what is referred to as “joyful movement.”

Tenants of joyful movement include

  • Movement can and will look different everyday. Somedays this could mean getting your heart pumping, while other days it means a nice stretch or even a rest day.

  • Movement should include activities that you actually enjoy. If this means you don’t like run or it doesn’t feel good for your body, that is okay. There is no one way to move your body. What you can enjoy can also change over time.

  • Set goals that do not have to do with body, size, or calories burned. This can look like “I want to become more flexible” or “I want to try a new class..” Movement goals that keep you motivated without shame or guilt are key to sustainability.
