Eating Disorder Awareness Week 2023

We are wrapping up “Eating Disorder Awareness” Week for 2023 which runs this year from February 27th - March 5th. Each year, the eating disorder community comes together during the week to spread awareness and highlight the important aspects of eating disorders, treatment, access, and the many people eating disorders impact.

It is estimated that nearly 28 million Americans will have an eating disorder in their lifetime. Despite that growing number, eating disorders are often mistakenly seen as a “thin, white, and female” disease. However, research shows that while eating disorders can impact anyone, people of color and gender diverse folks are the least likely to receive a diagnosis for an eating disorder let alone receive treatment. There is a lot of work to do within the field of eating disorders, from provider education, accessible care, to breaking stigma.

NEDA has provided resources during this week to emphasize what we can all do collectively not only this week, but every day.

  • Continue the Conversation: start the conversation early with a loved one can help prevent an eating disorder or help someone you know who may be struggling

  • Strengthen Recovery: Eating disorders are medical conditions and recovery should include a diverse group of professionals and support systems.

  • End the cycle: Recovery is possible. It takes work but we hope that the number of those impacted by an eating disorders starting to dwindle as we tackle accessibility, reducing stigma, and increasing awareness and support.
